About:
Join the LAII for a film screening of Return to the Andes and a Q&A with the film director, Mitch Teplitsky. After 20 years in New York City, Nelida Silva (title character of Soy Andina) returns again to her Andean birthplace with a dream to help rural women launch small businesses. Then the unexpected happens —she’s invited to run for mayor by a new political party. Fed up with the region's decline and corruption, she accepts the challenge. Can she become the first woman to win, campaigning on a platform of sustainable development and anti-corruption against eight men who call her an outsider? "Inspiring and insightful... a must-watch for anyone interested in politics, transnational migration, social justice, and women empowerment in the Andes and beyond." - Serafin M. Coronel-Molina, Director, Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Indiana University.
Mitch Teplitsky is a documentary filmmaker specializing in uplifting stories about people who bridge cultures and create community, from New York to Peru to Indiana. His films Soy Andina and Return to the Andes have been screened on PBS television and at hundreds of universities, film festivals, and other venues worldwide. Mitch was a Fulbright Specialist in Peru and later produced New American Girls, a web series about Dreamers for PBS online. He is currently working on a story about Spencer Pride, an LGBTQ+ Center in a rural Indiana town. Before producing documentaries, Mitch was the first marketing director for the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
