About:

Join the LAII, the CSWR, and SPAN&PORT for a poetry reading and public coversation featuring lifelong friends Margaret Randall and Víctor Rodríguez Núñez, moderated by Katherine M. Hedeen.

Víctor Rodríguez Núñez (Havana, 1955) is a poet, journalist, essayist, translator, and professor. He is one of Cuba’s most outstanding and celebrated contemporary writers, with one hundred editions of poetry published throughout the world. He has received major awards in the Spanish-speaking region, including the coveted Loewe Prize. During the eighties, he was the editor of the influential Cuban cultural journal, El Caimán Barbudo, where he published numerous articles on poetry and film.

Margaret Randall (New York, 1936) is a poet, essayist, translator, and social activist. She grew up in Albuquerque and came back to the city after almost a quarter century in Latin America. In Mexico, she co-founded and edited the bilingual literary journal El Corno Emplumado / The Plumed Horn. In Cuba and Nicaragua, she participated in revolutionary cultural projects. Upon her return to the United States, the government ordered her deported, citing passages in some of her books that they deemed “subversive.” After a 5-year struggle and with much support, she won her case.

Katherine M. Hedeen is a prize-winning translator of poetry and an essayist. A specialist in Latin American poetry, she has translated over thirty books of some of the most respected voices from the region into English. Her work has been a finalist for the Best Translated Book Award and the National Translation Award. She is a recipient of the University of Wisconsin’s inaugural Poetry in Translation Prize, two NEA Translation Grants, and a PEN Translates award in the UK. She is an editor for the transnational and translational press, Action Books.
