Join the Latin American and Iberian Institute and teacher Claudio Pérez, the creator of the Albuquerque Museum’s Border Doors exhibit, for an inspiring workshop focused on Latin American migration to the US.
Claudio will share his Border Door project’s inspiration, offer a background on migration, and provide a lesson plan for educators to bring back to their classrooms. Participants will reflect on the immigrant experience and explore how art can be a powerful tool for storytelling and change. Educators will also enjoy a private tour of the exhibit and create their own "border door," reflecting on the human stories behind immigration. The workshop will also feature Marvin Domínguez (History teacher at Sandia Prep) and Gigi Yu (Art Education professor at UNM).
Claudio Pérez is a Spanish Teacher at Sandia Preparatory School. Since 2014, he has been taking his advanced Spanish-language students to El Paso, Texas where they utilize their Spanish skills to interact first-hand with immigrants and advocates at the Cristo Rey Border Immersion Program. Upon their return to Albuquerque, students illustrate a series of doors containing colorful and powerful imagery that tells the stories of the people they met and reflect on major themes of immigration at the border.
This workshop is open to all K-12 teachers. APS teachers are highly encouraged to attend!
