About:

The musical lives of New Spanish nuns can inform us about gender, sexuality, and race relations
in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Starting with reflections on the Magnificat
antiphon O Sapientia, located in a Mexico City chant book, I investigate the phenomenon of the
Virgin Mary’s characterization as sound in convent music and devotional books that inspired
nuns and their music making.

Notes:

Co-sponsored by the UNM Department of Music and the LAII. This event is free and open to the public.
