Claudio Pérez, a Spanish teacher at Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque, collaborated with three elementary schools—Alvarado Elementary School, Coronado Elementary School, and New Mexico International School—and with Escuela Primaria Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Ciudad Juárez on a cross-border art and literacy project exploring immigration and borderlands.

As part of the project, students in Albuquerque painted one side of mini wooden doors and met with Sandia Prep high school students to read and discuss children’s books focused on immigrants’ experiences. Fifth graders at Alvarado and Coronado Elementary painted doors that were later exchanged with the school in Ciudad Juárez, while seventh grade students at New Mexico International School also contributed painted doors to the project. Through guided conversations, students reflected on themes of connection, separation, and identity.

In the weeks that followed, Albuquerque students participated in discussions, writing, and sketching exercises to develop personal responses to the concept of borders, with all ideas encouraged through artistic expression. Using acrylic paint and original color-mixing techniques, students visualized their ideas. While writing their artist statements, the students met with Dr. Alicia Romero, Head Curator in Albuquerque, who supported them in articulating their work both literally and figuratively. The painted doors were then sent to Ciudad Juárez, where students painted the opposite sides. Both sides of the completed doors will be displayed at Masley Hall Gallery.
