In this presentation, Dr. Ochoa will explore the deep contradictions within Mexico’s food systems, where celebrated culinary traditions coexist with hunger, inequality, and rising diet-related disease. Drawing on historical and contemporary analysis, Dr. Ochoa will examine how neoliberal policies and the growing power of mega food corporations —such as GRUMA, Bimbo, and Walmart Mexico—have reshaped food production, distribution, and consumption. The presentation will connect economic and political structures to social and cultural consequences, challenging romanticized narratives of Mexican cuisine. Ultimately, it will touch upon global debates on food sovereignty by envisioning more equitable, sustainable, and socially just food systems.
