LAII Awarded Renewal of People to People License
September 29, 2014
The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) has secured a two-year renewal of the People-to-People license for the University of New Mexico (UNM), which will allow the LAII to continue conducting educational programs in Cuba.
UNM is one of only a handful of universities to have secured this type of license, which is generally reserved for travel agencies and chambers of commerce. This license will supplement the academic license that the LAII has managed for over three decades. While the academic license permits travel to Cuba for UNM faculty and students, the People-to-People license enables the LAII to organize educational programs for members of the community beyond UNM.
The LAII conducted three programs to Cuba during the first year of the license. An additional three programs are currently scheduled for the spring semester: The Visual Arts of Cuba, January 10-17, 2015, offered in conjunction with the Tamarind Institute; Religious Diversity in Cuba, February 7-14, 2015; and The Arts and Culture of Cuba, March 21-28, 2015, offered with the Division of Continuing Education.
