MALAS Student Profile: Adam Flores

2013-2014 shows the MALAS program with a strong and diverse array of students. Among these students is Adam Flores, a dual degree MALAS/JD student whose concentrations in LAS include History and Human Rights. Adam's interest in the immigration consequences for criminal defendants grounds his time at UNM and beyond.
Adam earned his Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in philosophy at the University of New Mexico. He is currently pursuing a Master's in Latin American Studies (LAS) along with a Juris Doctor degree through the LAII's MALAS/JD dual degree program.
Within the field of Latin American studies, Adam's interests include human rights, immigration, and Spanish colonial history. With regards to immigration, Adam is particularly interested in the immigration consequences for criminal defendants. His thesis, which combines law and Latin American studies, focuses on the prosecution of enforced disappearance in Uruguay. In the summer of 2011, Adam participated in an intensive Spanish language program at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador. Through the LAS program Adam has had the opportunity to further his Spanish language acquisition, which enhances not only his studies at UNM but also his ability to provide quality legal services to Spanish-speaking New Mexicans.
Adam currently holds various professional positions within the fields of law and Latin American studies. He is a graduate assistant for the LAII's K-12 outreach program where he assists with professional development workshops, writes for the Vamos a Leer blog, promotes and disseminates the K'iche' Maya Oral History Project, and aids in developing resources for educators such as the LAII's culture box program. Outside of UNM, Adam works with Law Access New Mexico, a program which provides legal services to low-income New Mexicans. As well, Adam serves as a law clerk for the Garcia Ives Nowara firm. In addition to this work, Adam has held various summer positions as a researcher and law clerk at a number of New Mexico law firms.
