A. Gabriel Meléndez Discussion & Book Signing at UNM Bookstore

October 14, 2013

LAII faculty affiliate A. Gabriel Meléndez is at the UNM Bookstore Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. to speak about and sign copies of his book, Hidden Chicano Cinema (Rutgers University Press). Included in the presentation is commentary by Paul Espinosa, award-winning filmmaker and producer.

Hidden Chicano Cinema examines how New Mexico, situated within the boundaries of the United States, became a stand-in for the exotic non-western world that tourists, artists, scientists and others sought to possess at the dawn of early filmmaking.

Meléndez is a professor and chair of the Department of American Studies at UNM and a literary, social and cultural critic with research interests in ethnic and cultural representations in film, autobiography, ethnopoetics and ethnocritical theory. He is the recipient of a Rockefeller Humanities Fellowship and several other research grants including awards from the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities, Center for Regional Studies, and Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project.

The event is sponsored by the UNM Bookstore, the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute and UNM's Department of American Studies.

The UNM Bookstore is located at 2301 Central Ave. NE at the intersection of Cornell and Central. Contact Lani Tyler at 277-7473 or latyler@unm.edu for more information.
