Mark Campbell graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in History and Latin American studies from the University of New Mexico. During his undergraduate Mark held multiple competitive research fellowships, including the El Puente Research Fellowship, the Arts & Sciences Support for Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) fellowship, and the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship (MMUF). Throughout these fellowships and his coursework Mark focused on the history of Cold War Latin America, specifically examining the history of the revolutionary left and the legacy of armed struggle throughout the region.

As a MALAS student, Mark is continuing his research on leftwing political violence, specifically examining Marxist revolutionary movements in South America and their operations within urban contexts. Working under the supervision of Dr. Les Field, Mark’s thesis works to construct a historical analysis of the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), and its relationship with Maoist student organizing in Colombia throughout the 1960s and 70s. Besides this, Mark is also interested in Marxist theories of development in relation to Latin America, and how Global South economies can develop themselves independently from the capitalist core and interdependently amongst themselves.
