Cory Mason
MALAS
Born and raised in Albuquerque, Cory pursued his higher education at New York University where he studied graduated with honors. While studying at NYU, Cory was able to study abroad in Spain and Argentina, where he developed a keen interest in history, human rights, and systems of justice. The ability to study abroad in hispanophone countries not only allowed Cory to work on language acquisition, but also called attention to the lasting legacy of Spanish colonization in New Mexico. Despite the distance, Cory always used New Mexico and its history to situate Spain and Argentina, their colonial histories, linguistic development, and economies. At the Latin American and Iberian Insitute, Cory hopes to synthisize New Mexico’s complex history as a crossroads of cultures and protect New Mexican communities from the political, economic, and enivromental impacts of climate change.
