This project draws from a qualitative approach and will analyze two examples of border-integrated art based out of San Diego-Tijuana to reflect on how they respond and use the border space to unite transnational communities. The element of community requires great attention and as such, emphasis will be placed on two communities within this borderland setting: San Diego-Tijuana and the larger international community attracted by these two art manifestations. Ruben's focus is on the Fandango Fronterizo and the Mural de la Hermandad projects--both tied to the same stretch of border and works that directly integrate and interrogate the dividing structure in some capacity. This project will build on literary productions within border studies and cultural studies and intends to combat misinformed biases and prejudices stemming from fearmongering in this social, cultural, and political borderland setting.
