Spanish and Portuguese
Erick Pineda, a Ph.D. candidate in the Spanish and Portuguese Department, is researching the Spanish language as spoken by the Purépecha community residing in the Lake Pátzcuaro area of Michoacan, Mexico. His project, funded by the Latin American and Iberian Institute, involves the collection of sociolinguistic interviews. These interviews are aimed at identifying linguistic attitudes towards both standard Spanish and the variant spoken by the Purépecha community. Additionally, Pineda's research aims to uncover language phenomena resulting from the interaction between Purépecha and Spanish, with a specific focus on aspectual and morphosyntactic changes induced by this linguistic contact.
