Aurelio M. Espinosa: an ideological-political figure in the emergence and configuration of Hispanic Studies in the United States
The goal of Inés's research is to unfold, examine, and contest the political history of the teaching of Spanish in the U.S. Drawing on the history of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish (AATS; 1916) as an internationally recognized institution, Inés examines the role of this association and its members in creating and shaping a new academic field. Within the emergence and positioning of Hispanic studies in the United States in the early twentieth century, one of the most recognized figures during the foundation period and establishing of the Association was Aurelio Macedonio Espinosa (1880-1958), first editor-in-chief of Hispania, the official academic journal. This project explores Espinosa as an ideological-political figure in the configuration of this academic space.
