Dr. Jessica Carey-Webb awarded a SPARK Catalyst Award

Dr. Jessica Carey-Webb, Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, was awarded a SPARK Catalyst Award from the University of New Mexico WeR1 Faculty Success NM SPARK Scholars Program and the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute.
Her research explores Counani (1886–1910s), an experimental utopian country in the Amazon, as a "political ecology laboratory." The project investigates how alternative political and ecological futures emerged within and remained shaped by the legacies of colonialism and resource extraction in the borderlands of Brazil and French Guiana.
