Emily Heimerman, 2026-2027 PhD Fellow

The LAII offers competitive PhD Fellowship awards to support doctoral students conducting dissertation research and writing related to Latin America and Iberia.

Meet PhD Fellow, Emily Heimerman. Emily is a PhD student in the history department. Her project is titled: Plagued by Trauma: Disease, Christianity, and Trauma in Late-Medieval Iberia and Italy, 1327-1523 C.E. Emily notes that “I've been studying the history of disease for well over a decade now, and the subject matter still amazes me every day. I chose to focus on the intersection of disease, religiosity, and emotional histories for several reasons, but the core reason was to add a greater sense of humanity and individual experience to the people of the distant past. Through the support of the LAII Ph.D. Fellowship, I am able to dedicate more time and energy to the dissertation-writing process, allowing me to delve deeper into these incredible stories.”
