Call for Applications for FLAS Fellowships
January 21, 2014
The LAII offers a reminder announcement regarding its call for applications for U.S. Department of Education Academic Year and Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. The deadline for applications is February 10, 2014.
FLAS Fellowships are highly competitive awards which recognize and assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate students seeking intensive language training in less-commonly-taught languages of Latin America, including K'iche' Maya, Quechua, and Portuguese. They are awarded in two durations: Academic Year and Summer.
Academic Year FLAS Fellowships: Recipients of academic year FLAS Fellowships are required to take courses at UNM in K'iche' Maya, Portuguese or Quechua as well as Latin American area studies courses. Undergraduate student applicants must be prepared to study one of the designated languages at the intermediate or advanced level. Graduate student applicants may study at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level. More information can be viewed in the FLAS academic year fellowship guidelines and application.
Summer FLAS Fellowships: Students may also apply for FLAS summer fellowships. These fellowships cover expenses associated with less-commonly-taught language programs approved by the US Department of Education but administered by universities throughout the United States. Some programs are held in the United States and others are held in Latin America. For information on eligible summer FLAS programs, please contact LAII Associate Director Amanda Wolfe (akwolfe@unm.edu). More information can be viewed in the FLAS summer fellowship guidelines and application.
