Student Organization

The Student Organization for Latin American Studies (SOLAS) aims to encourage and promote engagement among students of Latin American Studies and the campus community of the University of New Mexico. Membership in SOLAS is open to all UNM students, both undergraduate and graduate, with interests in Latin American and Latino/a/x communities and populations, and their cultures, histories, languages, arts, politics, geographies, and current issues.

As an independent student-run organization, SOLAS advocates for the interests of its members and seeks to develop collaboration and networking with the Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII) and its department staff and faculty, as well as with other departments, programs, faculty, and student organizations across the UNM campus.

SOLAS supports activities that create awareness of current events and issues affecting Latin American and Latinx communities and populations and sponsors social and cultural events that contribute to dialogue, engagement, learning, and reflection. The group also pursues non-academic monthly socials for students to socialize with their cohort, classmates, and future colleagues.

The overall goal of the group is to foster a supportive space for students with similar interests in Latin American and Latinx studies and careers. The mission of SOLAS is to provide students with support and learning opportunities that promote student engagement and success and further the reach of Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico.
