Joel Zapata received a Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar award in Summer 2018 to support research on "The Mexican Southern Plains: Creating an Ethnic Mexican Homeland on the Llano." At the time of the award, he was a PhD candidate in the Department of History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. 
Zapata's research interest include Chicana/o activism in the Southern Plains, Chicana/o history, Tejano history, and cultural ecology.  


Title of Research : The Mexican Southern Plains: Creating an Ethnic Mexican Homeland on the Llano

UNM Latin American library holdings used for his research include the Ruben Cobos Collection of Southwestern Folklore and Folk Music, the Enrique Lamadrid Collection of Folk Songs, Oral Histories and Photographic Project, the John Donald Robb Field Recordings, and the Juan S. Lucero and Lora Chavez Collection of New Mexico Hispanic Religious and Traditional Songs, among others. The research conducted will play an important role in the completion of his dissertation plans.
