Tuition Assistance

The University of New Mexico is one of the most affordable institutions in the United States that still provides a quality education. Nonetheless, we know that graduate school can be an expensive endeavor for students paying out of pocket. One of the ways that we try to support students in this regard is by making them aware of a possible reduced tuition rate for out-of-state students, namely students from states of the western US This rate is made possible by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).

Through WICHE, gradate students who are permanent residents of states that are part of the WICHE exchange can request a reduced tuition rate. Students enrolled in a WUE program receive a tuition rate either comparable to resident tuition or 150 percent of New Mexico resident tuition, plus all applicable fees.
  • Eligible students include first-time freshmen and new transfer students who are permanent residents of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington or Wyoming.
  • WUE participants are chosen selectively based upon the prospective student's application for admission.
To apply for this reduced rate, apply directly to The University of New Mexico. There is no need to apply separately to WICHE. All questions should be directed to the UNM Office of Admissions.
