Faculty-Led Study Abroad

As part of the LAII's efforts to foster stimulating teaching and scholarship on Latin America, each year we issue a call for faculty-led study abroad course proposals. The courses that we support help to infuse or strengthen Latin American content in departments across campus.

The call for faculty-led study abroad course proposals is issued each fall and is made possible by the funding that the LAII receives through our US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant. While we welcome proposals with any type of Latin America-related focus, we encourage proposals for study abroad in regions with significant indigenous populations, and/or proposals that address themes that include issues of cultural or environmental sustainability. Priority will be given to those programs that have not received support from Title VI funds in previous years. Thematic priorities change, and will be announced each year as part of the call.
Tenured and tenure-track faculty at The University of New Mexico are eligible to apply.

To apply, submit a one-page overview of the proposed study abroad program. The grant provides $4,000 for the faculty member to deliver course instruction during the program and up to $3,500 for the faculty member's travel and per diem.  The funds cannot be spent for any other purpose. It is expected that the study-abroad program will be offered before the beginning of the following fall semester. Details concerning each year's call for proposals will be circulated directly to the LAII Faculty Concilium.
