Latin American Studies (LAS) is the ideal major for students who want to learn more about a world region that is critically important to both New Mexico and the US.
Our students choose LAS for a variety of reasons: to learn more about their heritage, to gain practical skills to make a change in the world, to deepen language proficiency, and to develop critical thinking and cultural competencies.
Requirements for an undergraduate degree in Latin American Studies vary for the major and the minor.
Every semester there are some one hundred courses offered with Latin American content at UNM.
Latin American Studies at UNM is sustained by a vibrant community of faculty who engage with the region in diverse ways.
Undergrad LAS students can apply for a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, a prestigious award that supports learning unique Latin American languages.
Students in the LAS program are diverse, drawing upon a range of academic, professional, and personal experiences related to Latin America.
