Teaching Assistantships

A small number of students pursuing an MA, MA dual degree, or PhD in the Latin American Studies program may be considered for a teaching assistantship with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Teaching assistantships provide recipients with relevant experience for academic-related careers, particularly in teaching or research.

Awarded for up to two years, the assistantship provides a stipend and health insurance and a waiver of tuition and fees for up to 12 credit hours per semester, excluding summer. Recipients are expected to work 20 hours per week.
All incoming students are eligible for a graduate assistantship from the Latin American and Iberian Institute, including US permanent residents, undocumented students, and international students.

Teaching assistantships are awarded to incoming students who demonstrate outstanding academic promise.  Language proficiency must be demonstrated in both English and Spanish before the assistantship can be officially awarded.
Applicants who meet the priority deadline for Fall admission consideration (February 1st) are evaluated automatically for both admission and teaching assistantship funding (no additional application for the teaching assistantship is necessary). Students who apply for Spring admission are not considered for teaching assistantships.
