Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Whitney's interest in Latin America was sparked by her primary school education during her linguistically and culturally immersive time at The International School. At Pitzer College, Whitney dual majored in Spanish and International and Intercultural Studies and spent time working on immigrant's rights issues with the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice and the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center in the Inland Empire. Upon completion of her bachelor's degree, she was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil and has since spent the last year as an AmeriCorps member serving as an afterschool educator and community liaison for Metropolitan Family Service in Portland. Whitney was drawn to the MALA's program for its interdisciplinary faculty, courses on community-based research, and generous funding. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to further pursue her education and immerse herself in the community of Albuquerque.
