Kaitlin Lewis is a third-year PhD student in Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. She completed undergraduate degrees in anthropology and Latin American Studies at Truman State University in 2021. Her research interests include Latin American immigration in the San Diego/Tijuana border region, immigration activism, and discourses surrounding immigration, (il)legality, and belonging. As a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellow, Kaitlin will study Portuguese and Latin American area studies topics. This language instruction will allow her to work closely with Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities and incorporate their experiences into her research.
