In this interactive workshop, Dr. Pacheco will model using the traditional story of La Llorona/The Wailing Woman to engage learners while learning core reading skills such as reading fluency and comprehension. She guides teachers to use the art of storytelling, music, and dance as a comprehensive approach to teaching reading and writing skills. Her asset-based literacy approach is a framework to supplement mandated structured literacy to help ensure bi- and multilingualism as well as cultural sustaining practices are core components of instruction.
Rosalía Pacheco, PhD is an educator, researcher, and cultural arts presenter. Her work honors folk arts and language traditions as a means for culturally and linguistically sustaining literacy practices. Dra. Pacheco is an Assistan Professor in the Department of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy (TEELP) where she teaches core reading courses and mentors pre-service teachers. Dra. Pacheco has presented in schools and communities throughout the U.S. She is a licensed teacher and previously taught in NM K-8 schools for 11 years. Her culturally sustaining work has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institution and Joint Council of Librarians of Color. She has worked with schools and community organizations as a presenter and scholar for over 25 years. Her most recent scholarly work centers on Bi and Multilingual Opportunity to Learn.
