Artist’s Statement

In order to explain my work, I need to share a bit of my artistic history and the history of the Nicaraguan people - what we want for our future, the role we will play in this world, and the legacy we will leave for future generations.

I began like any artist.  Since I was very young I have felt a desire to express myself with my hands.  My first influence in this difficult but wonderful world of painting was that of a young painter named Silvio Miranda, my uncle, who died in the prime of his life at the age of 24.

He was my inspiration.  His artwork really influenced me and made me want to be like him.  First, I taught myself how to paint, later I entered the National School of Fine Arts where I began my professional career.

As some of us know, Nicaragua has had its share of vicissitudes, antagonisms, and political, economic, social and military demagoguery.  People simply cannot agree on how to solve problems, even though it could be done simply and with common sense.  Still, people cannot agree on how to protect that which nature has given us, nor can they agree on ways to break the old paradigms.

In my paintings I try to show that I am a thoughtful and imaginative artist, in much the same way that I think people should take responsibility for their own actions.  Most of my pieces have as a focal point a fruit from our region know as the granadilla, which is a fruit normally used for a delicious drink by the same name.  I find it to be an interesting fruit because of its form, colors and gradations, and also because of its sensual quality.  It represents to me much of my childhood, because I had the opportunity to cultivate it during that part of my life in my native town of San Carlos, in the Department of the Rio San Juan.  Through painting this masterpiece of God, I paint nature.

I often paint a window within this wonderful fruit, which to me represents opportunity, something we all have access to.  We must all care for our world; as human beings we have the obligation to contribute one grain of sand in order to stop the destruction of our ecosystem.  Sometimes I will add little paper boats, paper airplanes, or soap bubbles to my paintings.  These images make me remember my youth, as these are things from when we were children that we as adults should not forget, so that we can in good conscience leave these things for future generations.  I also like to add patches of things to the surface of objects, which serve to remind us that we should not cover up and hide what we want out of life, but instead we should fight for our ideals.  You can also see in my paintings support structures that represent our attachment to the things that we want from life, things we are indebted to.  The landscapes in my paintings are very characteristic and versatile, because I love nature and my country, and I try to promote Nicaragua’s beautiful countrysides.  I tell my observers that we have to take care of these landscapes and conserve them, because they are part of our natural heritage, and that it is important to leave them for our children and also for the rest of humanity.

I am also versatile in my style of painting.  I am open to other styles and have been experimenting with different techniques.  I paint because I am passionate about art.  It gives me great pleasure, and through it I can express my deepest feelings about life.  I believe art is aesthetic, it is meant to decorate and to be beautiful.   Life itself is an art, and my heart is filled with art.  Because of this, I know that I was born to paint.
