This award-winning Spanish film documents the story of a young rabbi originally from Sarajevo, who journeys from Jerusalem throughout the Jewish Diaspora to Toledo, Spain looking for places where his Sephardic ancestors lived for five centuries.  Through interviews and visits to historic sites, he explains his efforts to keep alive the Sephardic legacy and culture for future generations.  Sponsored by the NM Anti-Defamation League, Instituto Cervantes, National Hispanic Cultural Center and Israeli Consulate.  Reception following the movie sponsored by the Israeli Consulate and the Isaac Liberman Foundation.  Presented in Ladino with English subtitles.

Join Chef Johnny Vee as he explores the connection between European Jewish cooking and its melding into the ancient cuisines of Mexico and Northern New Mexico.  A history lesson and hands-on cooking class will touch on the Crypto-Jewish culture and its effect on Mexican and American Indian cookery. Art Exhibit: 5 pm – 7 pm,  El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe,Unified Borders at 615 Paseo de Peralta @ The Railyard, Santa Fe

An exciting contemporary Mexican art exhibit and reception with the artist, Beatriz Ezban, a Sephardic Jewish Mexican painter whose works are part of important collections such as The Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, The Contemporary Museum of Art in Oaxaca, the National Presidential House in Mexico and the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

Also on display at El Museo Cultural is Voyages to Freedom: 500 Years of Jewish Life in Latin America and the Caribbean a historical exhibit produced by the Anti-Defamation League.  Sponsored by the Mexican Consulate, The NM Anti-Defamation League, The Latin American and Iberian Institute at UNM and El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe.

Guillermo Figueroa, Music Director and Conductor , New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

A personal journey through music, stories and photographs chronicling the discovery of Figueroa’s  Jewish roots in Puerto Rico, tracing his family from Spain to Europe to the Americas.  With violin and piano.  Sponsored by the New Mexico Anti-Defamation League, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Presented in Spanish with English subtitles and followed by a Q&A with Mexican Director and Producer Daniel Goldberg.

This Mexican documentary chronicles the experiences of Jewish refugees who came from Europe to settle in Mexico during the 1920s and 30s, escaping anti-Semitism and the forced economic hardships they endured in their homelands.  Many had hoped that “America” was the U.S., but strict quota laws sent people to Mexico, Central and South America.     The stories of these refugees are told via interviews, archival film clips, photographs and other resources.  Sponsored by the Mexican Consulate and the Sokolove/Singer/Buchwald families in honor of Dr. David Buchwald in conjunction with the NM Anti-Defamation League, Instituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Ilan Stavans is a Mexican-American essayist, lexicographer, cultural commentator, translator, short-story author, TV personality, and teacher known for his insights into American, Hispanic, and Jewish cultures.  Stavans has been called “the czar of Latino culture in the United States” by the New York Times and “Latin America’s liveliest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast” by the Washington Post.  Stavans, whose Jewish family emigrated from Poland to Mexico, is the Lewis-Sebring Professor of Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College and the recipient of numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Latino Literature Prize, Chile’s Presidential Medal, and the Rubén Darío Distinction. He earned an Emmy nomination as host of the PBS show La Plaza: Conversations with Ilan Stavans.  Sponsored by the NM Anti-Defamation League, the NM History Museum and National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Paper Series

About

The LAII's Research Paper Series, Occasional Paper Series, and Mercosur Working Paper Series provide refereed forums for the timely dissemination of research on Latin American and Iberian topics.  Authors gain the benefit of comment and criticism from the larger research community for if they intend later to submit their work to other publications. Graduate students and faculty are encouraged to submit paper.  Submissions are accepted annually in the spring.  Deadlines TBA.

Guidelines

The LAII Operations Committee will not consider submissions eligible for publication in the LAII's Research Paper Series or Occasional Paper Series unless the author(s) follow the formatting and editorial criteria outlined below:

Formatting Criteria

  1. Manuscripts must not have been published elsewhere in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, or be under consideration elsewhere for publication.
  2. Manuscripts may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.
  3. Only nonfiction manuscripts will be considered.
  4. Student submissions must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the author's faculty advisor or from a faculty specialist in the subfield in which the paper was written.  The letter should specifically address the merits of the paper and how it fits into the LAII Research Paper Series or Occasional Paper Series.
  5. Research papers must be accompanied by an abstract and title page.

Editorial Criteria

  1. Manuscripts must be submitted in electronic format in Microsoft Word.  An abstract of not more than 100 words should precede the text.  No hard copies will be accepted.
  2. Manuscripts should not exceed 35 pages in length, including endnotes and bibliographic references.
  3. Authors should conform to the accepted citation guidelines for their disciplines (e.g. Chicago, MLA, etc.) and should be consistent throughout the document.
  4. Final copyediting is the responsibility of the author under the direction and guidance of the LAII Operations Committee.
  5. The title page should include the author's or authors' name(s), department(s), and institutional affiliation(s).
  6. Manuscripts published in the Research Paper Series and Occasional Paper Series are copyrighted in the name of the author and may be submitted elsewhere six months after publication.

2.     KEYNOTE SPEECH

 

Theme:

Open communication technologies, cultural diversity, and translation in the era of globalization.

Objective:

A review of the Open Archives Initiative will be provided; the importance of open access in supporting education, the archiving and discovery of knowledge, and for stimulating innovation.

To bring together TICFIA-LAKH project colleagues and UNM representatives who are working in closely related topics to explore areas of current and potential collaboration.

 

Format:

Discussion sessions will be divided into thematic areas. Participants will have the opportunity to share institutional knowledge, materials, and contacts for future collaboration. Simultaneous and alternative groups suggested include:

 

Group A: Uses of open source technology for accessing knowledge in Sciences, Humanities and Arts. Institutions represented: CAIS, CenTRA, CUCS, IBICT, LAII, LAKH, UL.

 

Group B:  Uses of technology for accessing non-traditional collection in History and Indigenous issues. Institutions represented: Abya Yala, Bolivarium, COE, DILARES, INLP, LAII, LAKH.

 

Group C:  Collaboration in Latin American Social Medicine studies. Institutions represented: CUCS, FC&M, HSLIC, LAKH, RWJFCHP.

New initiatives for strengthening LAKH partnerships and increasing collaboration

To evaluate the LAKH project performance. The previous three workshops will contribute important insights for the evaluation process of the TICFIA/LAKH project.

Hosts will provide guidelines for discussing and summarize the TICFIA-LAKH project performance. This will allow for discussion among TICFIA-LAKH project participants of their progress, problems encountered, solutions found, and new goals.
