In June 2008 the Cross-Border Issues Group visited Chiapas, Mexico to study immigration issues.  Below we present a few video samples of their work during their visit.

Chiapas DVD 2.1 "Life in rural village"

Amelia Díaz Hernandez grew up  in the small village of  San Andrés Larráinzar before immigrating to the nearby city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. She describes the hard living conditions in rural communities, even those that have been influenced by Zapatista principles.

Chiapas DVD 2.2 "NAFTA and the Resistance"

Miguel Pickard White of the Centro de Investigaciones Económicas y Politicas de Acción Comunitaria (CIEPAC) in San Cristóbal de Las Casas explains how NAFTA and globalization contributed to the migration of rural indigenous from Chiapas and Guatemala, and how the Zapatistas in autonomous zones have organized to resist those forces. CIEPAC provides information and analysis for those communities.

Chiapas DVD 2.3  "Migration adversely affects traditional rural communities"

Santiago López Gomez of the Comité de Derechos Humano in Ocosingo assists migrants, indigenous and indigents in Mexico and Guatemala. He describes how the lure of migration adversely affects both young migrants and their traditional rural communities, as well as how migrants are abuse and violence in transit.

Chiapas DVD 2.4  "Amelia identifies with her  indigenous Tzotzil roots"

Amelia Díaz Hernandez grew up in the small in San Andrés Larráinzar, speaking Tzotzil before migrating to the nearby city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. She continues to identify with her indigenous Tzotzil roots even though she migrated to the city to improve her lifestyle and for economic opportunities for her family.

Chiapas DVD 2.5   "CBIG group members cross border to Guatemala"

Cross Border Issues Group members Christina Lovato, Jennifer Vieth, Maggie Ybarra, Carolyn Gonzales, Richard Schaefer, Arturo López Durán and Rafa Quijana, along with Romeo Méndez, crossed the Mexico-Guatemala border at Ciudad Cuauhtémoc to see the effects of globalization and immigration on Mexico’s southern border.

Mexico

CIESAS-(Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antopología Social)

Tlalpan, México DF, Merida, Guadalajara, San Cristóbal de las Casas. GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY.

UNM has a Graduate Student Exchange with CIESAS.
The intent is to exchange 5 students per semester from each institution. The benefits for UNM students to take part of a year in Mexico are: 1) language training (in Spanish and indigenous languages) and 2) the opportunity to do direct fieldwork early in their graduate career.

CIESAS academic calendar is four three-month periods (cuatrimestres). Biennial promotions for entrance to the graduate program, in alternating years between Mexico City and Guadalajara/San Cristobal de Chiapas.

Courses begin in May and go until April of the following year.

ITESM-Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey-(FLUENCY NOT REQUIRED-MANY COURSES TAUGHT IN ENGLISH-BEGINNING SPANISH OK)

Ten one-on-one student exchange positions are available each fall, spring, and summer semester. Undergraduate semesters run August-December, January-May, and June-July. Graduate classes are offered on a Trimester basis. Undergraduate and graduate students with an excellent command of the Spanish language may take regular classes at any of the 29 ITESM campuses.

  • Hotel Management and Tourism
  • Mexican Art, Culture, Dance, History, Literature, and Theatre

Internships in various areas and a Volunteer Social Work Program are also available at certain locations. Spaces are limited.

Summer Programs

The TEC de Monterrey (ITESM) is offering several Summer Programs in Mexico. Programs include Intensive Spanish, Mexican Culture, Business Spanish, and Medical Spanish. There is even one along the Mayan Route (4-week program), which allows students to explore Yucatan while learning about the unique Mayan culture. Locations where summer programs are offered change every year, but in the past they have been offered at the following campuses: Estado de Mexico, Cuernavaca, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Merida, and Chihuahua.

Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana-Centro Histórico, México DF

Up to 4 UNM students per semester or year may attend UCSJ.

The University now offers a masters program. On the main page click on "Programas Académicos", then click "Maestrías".

UCSJ is a secular, co-educational institution with an academic focus on the humanities. Their Master's Program in Colonial Culture is the only graduate program to specialize in the culture of the Colonial Period in Mexico.

The UCSJ is housed in the 16th century convent where the famous Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, one of Mexico's greatest poets, lived during the 17th century. The university building is part of the historical district (Centro Histórico) of downtown Mexico City.

Universidad La Salle is centrally located within the heart of the trendy Colonia Condesa, which can be easily reached by subway, bus or taxi. It is within walking distance of many restaurants, cafés, bookstores, museums and movie theaters, and only a twenty-minute ride from the Historic Center of downtown Mexico City. There are also branch campuses in Cancún, Chihuahua, Cuernavaca, Ciudad Obregón, Ciudad Victoria, Durango, Guadalajara, Morelia, León, Pachuca and Saltillo.

The Spanish for Foreigners Program offers 3 and 5 week intensive Spanish programs, as well as a summer program.

Mexico

Both the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas and Benemerita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla are located in the heart of indigenous territories.  They are among the oldest institutions in the Americas and are leaders in working with indigenous communities in their self-determined struggles toward economic and social development.  U. Chiapas is located in one of the states of Mexico where the majority population is indigenous.  The historic town of Puebla is a world heritege site.
