The U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program is administered jointly by the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE Program) and the Brazilian Ministry of Education (CAPES).
The Consortium will support the exchange of 36 students among the partner universities from 2007 to 2010. UNM will send 3 students per academic year starting in
2007 to study during one semester at one of the Brazilian partner universities (additional semester might be supported depending on the student’s progress and desire).
U.S. students will take regular courses at a top Brazilian university, become proficient in Portuguese, get acquainted with Brazilian culture, and gain international
experience. Brazilian students will receive similar benefits during the semester spent at Texas Tech University or UNM. Students pay tuition to their home university and transfer
credits back to their home university.
ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate or Graduate students. Most majors and interdisciplinary studies programs accepted (except language majors).
Program participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. 3.0 GPA average in major course work.
ACADEMIC CREDITS: Students will receive full credit (12-15 credit hours per semester) for successfully completed course work. Students must obtain advisor’s approval
for the courses that will be taken in Brazil to ensure transfer of credits that will meet their degree requirements at UNM.
An International Certificate is available for students who take specific courses at
UNM and at host university.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: A good working knowledge of Portuguese is needed to attend classes in Brazil. Students should be in their 5th semester of Portuguese when applying.
Students that are proficient in Spanish should take at least one semester of Portuguese. An Intensive Portuguese course is offered in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo before classes
start at the host university. Brazilian students must have a TOEFL score of 520/190/68 for undergraduates or 550/213/79-80 for graduate students.
SCHOLARSHIP: Students will receive $3,500 per semester which includes roundtrip airfare from Albuquerque to Brazil, basic room and board, and personal expenses.
An allowance of up to $1000 can be used to pay for intensive language instruction in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro before the beginning of the program.
HOW TO APPLY: Applicants must apply like a regular semester exchange students. The deadline is April 1 for the Fall semester or October 1 for the Spring semester.
