Program and Event Funding Opportunities

The LAII funds lectures, presentations or discussions dealing with the promotion of scholarly activities closely related to Latin America. Read the Guidelines for Requesting Funds for Programs and Events and fill out an online funding request form.

Latin American and Iberian Institute Programs

In addition to teaching and research, LAII administers or provides support to the following programs.

Study abroad in Spain or Latin America and get UNM credit.

UNM has 80 convenios with universities in Latin America and Spain, and with the Organization of American States, and Semester exchange agreements with 55 universities.

Online News and Information Service covering Mexico, Central America and the Carribean including Cuba, and South America. CLARO's supports K-12 teaching about Latin America. It has a library of curriculum guides, videos, recordings, maps, and books that can be borrowed or purchaseda.

Contact CLARO for faculty and student speakers who will visit area schools to offer class presentations on Latin American themes, such as history, culture, literature, recent events, human rights issues, and the environment.

LAKH, the Latin America Knowledge Harvester and Portal,funded by the US Department of Education Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) is a web-based service, leading users to access retrieve content from digitized Latin American multidisciplinary collections, built on Open Archives Initiative protocol (OAI). This project is managed by the Latin American & Iberian Institute and University Libraries at UNM.

CAIS, the Consortium of the Americas for Interdisciplinary Science, is a Center of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of New Mexico (UNM) established to encourage collaborations between Latin America and UNM in interdisciplinary science, focusing on research and technology in computationally complex systems, novel materials and meso- and nano-science.

LASM, the Latin America Social Medicine atabase provides Spanish, Portuguese, and English structured abstracts summarizing classic and contemporary works in the field of practice of Latin American Social Medicine.

The College of Education's Office of Latin American Programs in Education (LAPE) carries out collaborative educational programs with Latin America, Canada, Equatorial Guinea, and Spain, often in conjunction with LAII.

Brazilian Studies working group. Contact Prof. Margo Milleret.

Caribbean Studies Working Group, includes Cuba research and study abroad opportunities through UNM's Treasury License for research travel to Cuba. Contact José Arturo "Pepe" Almeida-Vinueza or Fernando Maresma.

Colonial Studies Working Group. The working group holds an annual symposium, the most recent was on "Interdisciplinary Methods in Colonial Studies: Exchanges Over Space and Time." Contact Dr. Cynthia Radding or Prof. Ray Hérnandez Duran.
