Latin American Studies
Hayley Pedrick, MA student in Latin American Studies, traveled to Medellín, San Rafael, and Granada, Colombia to explore how Colombia’s civil conflict is memorialized in public spaces. Her research addresses how memory speaks to the individual or the collective, how urban versus rural experiences are presented and the impressions and motivations of visitors at formal memorials. Hayley conducted a comparative study of urban-rural memorials as necessary for a holistic understanding of the displacement and movement towards peace in Colombia. Her project contributes to the intersecting disciplines of human and cultural geography, museum and heritage tourism and social justice, all with a particular focus on space.
