Dr. Mario Del Angel Guevara in an episode of New Mexico Strange

In an episode of New Mexico Strange, Dr. Mario Del Angel Guevara, Assistant Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Afflitiated Faculty at the LAII, explores the history of Curanderismo, a traditional healing practice with deep roots in Mexican culture. He explains how cultures in different areas share knowledge and artifacts that expand their own wisdom over the generations as populations migrate and integrate such as between Mexico and New Mexico, where it became one of the earliest forms of medicine introduced in the Americas. Dr. Guevara discusses the traditions and cultural significance of Curanderismo, examines the scientific principles underlying some of its practices, and addresses the misconceptions and prejudices that have historically surrounded this form of traditional medicine.
