Students Across Campus Awarded Funding to Support Learning and Research Related to Latin America

Thursday, May 11, 2017 -- Each spring, the LAII awards a variety of funding to students across campus to support learning and research related to Latin America. This funding typically comes in the form of field research grants for graduate students; Foreign Language and A rea Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students; and PhD Fellowships for doctoral students. Each source of financial support recognizes meritorious students whose scholarship, research, and learning relates to Latin America or, in some cases, Iberia. Below are the students who have received awards for the coming year. Profiles of their research will be shared in the coming weeks.

Thursday, May 11, 2017 -- On April 21, 2017, the Latin American & Iberian Institute proudly hosted a reception to honor affiliated faculty who had published books in 2016. It was held in conjunction with the LAII's annual faculty concilium luncheon, and provided an opportunity to reflect on the breadth and depth of scholarship shared by Latin Americanist and Iberianist faculty across campus.

This year, the conference focuses on Latin American immigration, asylum, and representation, and emphasizes the need for effective representation in asylum cases. MALAS Student Profile: Devon Lara

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 -- Devon received her B.S. in Biology with minors in Spanish and Honors from the University of New Mexico. She chose to also attend graduate school at UNM because of its combined Public Health and Latin American Studies dual-degree Master's programs. The dual-degree program is uniquely designed and conducive to the training she hopes to gain, balancing academics, research, and national and global practice with Latino populations. Devon's research interests include Latino and immigrant health and Mexico-U.S. border health.
