The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the summer of 2013 and the academic year of 2013-14. Congratulations to:
As part of the LAII's mission to create a stimulating environment for the production and dissemination of knowledge of Latin America and Iberia at UNM, each spring the LAII Grants and Awards Committee-composed of LAII-affiliated faculty from across campus-offers students a rare opportunity to study Portuguese, K'iche' Maya, and Quechua. The opportunity, available through FLAS fellowships, assists meritorious undergraduate and graduate students undergoing intensive training in less-commonly-taught languages by providing them with a stipend and financial support for tuition and fees.
FLAS Fellowships are highly competitive awards funded by the U.S. Department of Education through Title VI of the Higher Education Act and administered by select universities throughout the United States. UNM is one of only 22 FLAS grantee institutions nationwide that is currently awarding grants for language training in Latin America.
Students seeking guidance on language preference/selection for future awards are encouraged to contact the FLAS coordinator, Amanda Wolfe, at email@example.com.
