Latin American Resources at the UNM Library
The Latin American collection development effort at UNM is headed
by Prof. Russ Davidson, Curator of Latin American & Iberian Collections. The Division of Iberian and Latin American Resources and
Services (DILARES), created in 2001, includes six librarians and five professional
staff, integrating various operations with fundraising and outreach. In addition the
Library has a Curator of Pictorial Collections and a Librarian for the fine arts.
According to figures published by the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American
Library Materials (SALALM), the UNM Latin American collection ranked in 2001 as the fourth
largest university collection in the country. With some 425,000 monographic volumes, or
21% of the total General Library holdings, Latin America continues to represent the
strongest single target for the UNM collection.
The Herzstein Latin
American Reading Room, built in 1999, provides access to over 300 periodicals and
includes a conference room, an exhibition gallery, and computer workstations with full
Internet access.
