Research Funding

About

The Latin American and Iberian Institute provides support for faculty and graduate students to conduct research in Latin America and Iberia.  Field Research Grants (FRGs) are meant to assist students and faculty in obtaining their first or second field research experience in Latin America.  The grants are generally for fairly brief periods of research (typically four to eight weeks) and cover transportation and lodging costs associated with the research.

***The Fall 2009 FRG competition is now closed**

Spring 2010 Student FRG awards will cover research conducted between April 1, 2010 and October 31, 2010.  Spring 2010 Faculty FRG awards will cover research conducted between April 1, 2010-2011.    Application deadlines will be scheduled for mid-spring semester (specific date TBA).

Guidelines

Applicants may be from any department or program in the university. Student deadline dates fall in October for winter research and in March for spring and summer research.  Faculty deadlines are in March for research conducted in the following year. Specific information on requirements and application procedures can be obtained from the LAII.

Student applicants must apply for a Student Research Allocations Committee Grant (SRAC) or a Graduate Research Project Travel Grant (RPT). Please contact the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) and the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) for information about those grants.

IRB for Human Research Subjects

Researchers applying for an FRG who will be working with human research subjects must obtain approval from the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB) before departure.  Updated information and forms are available through the IRB website.   Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the IRB office early in their application process to ensure sufficient time for review, revision,  and approval.

IACUC for Animal Research Subjects

Researchers applying for an FRG who will be conducting research and other activities involving animals are required to obtain approval from the UNM Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee before departure.  Due to the time needed for the review process, the IACUC notes that new applications and other submissions must be received 21 days prior to the next scheduled committee meeting.   Meetings are held on a monthly basis.  Applicants should contact IACUC for the most current deadline schedule.

Documents

Application forms for Spring 2009 FRG funding will be posted early Spring semester.

Applicants may also download previously-funded research proposals so as to have a sense of what represents a well-written proposal.  These documents have been selected as guidelines because they were each deemed by the Grants & Awards Committee to have appropriate organization, explanation, support and presentation.  As a caveat, please note that these documents should only be used as  guidelines and not as strict templates.  Applicants should refer to the current FRG application for appropriate formatting (e.g. maximum four pages, double-spaced, etc.).

Also available for review are samples of an FRG budget and an FRG itinerary.  Again, please use these samples as guidelines rather than templates and refer to the application instructions for complete details regarding how to compose each.
