About the Latin American and Iberian Institute

The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) supports the administration of UNM's interdisciplinary degree programs in Latin American Studies and the university's Latin American and Iberian activities in all its schools and colleges with outreach to New Mexico, the nation and international communities.

Latin America Faculty and Staff For Students For Visitors Events
More than 100 faculty at UNM engage in research and teaching about Latin America. These faculty make up the LAII Faculty Concilium that supports the programs of the Institute and Latin American programs on campus. LAII is guided by an Executive Committee made up of members of the Concilium.

LAII also has expert staff working on its various projects including information harvesting technology and partnerships to expand access to Latin America open archive collections , Latin America journalism, study abroad programs, and outreach to K-12 teachers.Search staff and expertise..

The UNM Latin American Studies program provides advisement and financial assistance for students.

LAII helps students study abroad in Latin America and Iberia.

LAII occupies a centrally located building on campus at 801 Yale NE, which offers a warm, friendly atmosphere where students and faculty can meet, use the LAII reading room, attend talks and colloquia, eat lunch, or simply relax.

Teachers can visit the teaching materials lending library of Latin America resources.

LAII and its student organization SOLAS regularly host speakers, film series, workshops, and conferences. View or submit events.

Cuba programs supported at LAII include research seminars, academic exchanges, and applied research on contemporary themes. Contact Fernando Maresma.
 

Study abroad in Spain or Latin America and get UNM credit.

UNM has 57 convenios with universities in 15 countries and with the Organization of American States. Semester exchange agreements with 31 universities in 10 countries are in place.

LAII supports research and encourages scholarly collaboration and dialogue by offering:

• A searchable database of expertise at UNM and LAII's consortium partner NMSU
